what is Yahsat?

Yahsat is a satellite telecommunications company initiated and wholly owned by Mubadala. Yahsat is the first company in the Middle East and Africa to offer multipurpose satellite services to the region.

how has Yahsat come about?

Yahsat is a project initiated by Mubadala, Abu Dhabi government's strategic investment and development vehicle. The Yahsat feasibility studies began in 2005 and a detailed market assessment was completed in March 2006. Yahsat was incorporated in January 2007. It has been formed to meet the demand in the region for multipurpose satellite services that offer smart satellite solutions.

Yahsat is the first company in the Middle East and Africa to offer multipurpose satellite services to the region. The services Yahsat will offer include:

    Through its innovative business model and partnership approach, Yahsat offers greater operational flexibility and custom-designed satellite services to a wide range of customers across the Middle East, Africa, Europe Central and South West Asia. Such customers include the government sector as well as a range of commercial clients, such as banking and financial institutions, broadcasters, manufacturers, mobile telecommunications networks and satellite service providers.

Yahsat will offer great operational flexibility and custom-designed satellite services to more than 140 countries across the Middle East, Africa, Europe Central and South West Asia.

how long did it take to build the satellites?

Yahsat has partnered with the consortium of EADS Astrium, Thales and Alenia Space to build a hybrid satellite communications system. The satellites were built in Europe in approximately 36 months.

when will the satellite(s) be launched?

The first satellite Y1A is operational launched in April 2011. It will be followed by the launch of Y1B in the first quarter of 2012.

what are the technical specifications of the satellite?

Yahsat will operate a hybrid satellite with a tri-band coverage. The first satellite (Yahsat 1A) is located at 52.5° East. The satellites will have a lifespan of 15 years and 10.9kW of power.
